My horses have been poisoned from an unknown source. They have become photosenitive and have liver damage.
We think we have caught it in time to save their lives but we are not certain yet. We are hopeful. Please look at the pictures
so you know what to look for in your own horses. I do not know if it was the grain or hay that did this. I think it may have
been from a new bag of grain. I started feeding a new bag of grain and 2 days later I had a horse with symptoms. I have been
feeding the same hay for 16 years. The grain is the same brand I have fed for many years just a new bag.
The
only reason I knew I had a problem was because I have a paint horse with a white head. The symptoms only show up on white
skin, especially around the eyes and mouth. It does not show up on dark skinned horses. I have 2 dark skinned horses and only
one is showning a small patch of skin trouble on his muzzle, the other horse has no symptoms at all. If I did not have
a paint horse I would not have caught this in time to save their lives. The sun is what made the sypmtoms show up. Other
things to look for are extreme itching. The horses become very itchy. They also have swelling around the eyes and head area.
If your horses have been turned out in the sun and show any of these symptoms bring them in and call your vet ASAP.
This is an update as of 4/10/08: As of now the last 2 blood tests have shown the liver counts in all 3 horses are improving.
Their skin issues are also improving. I am now turning them out in the daylight for about 2 hours in the early morning and
late evening. They are not showing any new skin issues so far but I am still being very cautious.
Please look at
the pictures so you know what to look for. The dark skin in the pictures is not dirt, it is actually the skin turning black!!!
Update on 5/31/08: We did another blood test this week and I am happy to report that all 3 horses liver counts are
back to NORMAL!! I am very happy.
If you have any information for me or questions send me an e-mail or call me.
